This article details how to upgrade an existing SQL Server 2008r2 (64bit) to SQL Server 2019 (free Express edition).
Sidenote: There is no upgrade path from 32bit to 64bit for any version of SQL, and since the last 32bit SQL Server was 2014, if you are running 32bit SQL Server you would need to uninstall SQL server 2008R2 and install SQL 2019 fresh.
1. Confirm that your version of Windows is supported by SQL Server 2019 (you must be running Windows 10 64bit - 32bit and earlier versions of Windows are not supported). More info is here:

2. Confirm that Idealpos is currently using 64 bit SQL Server 2008 r2 by:
a) Start IPSUtils.
b) Click Advanced.
c. Click SqlCmd Line.
d. Type the following commands, then press the Enter key:
select @@version
go
The current version of SQL Server displays:
If you are running SQL Server 2008r2 (or any version of SQL Server earlier than version 2019), proceed to step 3.
3. In the above check, you must be running Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 <SP3> (Service Pack 3). If not, download and then run SP2 and then SP3

4. At the SQL Server 2008 R2 update screen , click Next:
5. At the License Terms screen, tick I accept the License Terms, and then click Next.
6. At the Select Features screen, IDEALSQL should be selected. Click Next:
7. At the Check Files in Use screen, click Next.
8. At the Ready to Update screen, click Update.
9. At the Complete screen, click Close:
10. Restart the PC.
11. Download and then run the SQL Server 2019 Express installer (SQLEXPR2019_x64_ENU.exe) from this link:

12. In Installation, click Upgrade from a previous version of SQL Server:
13. At the License Terms screen, tick I accept the License Terms, and then click Next.
14. The Select Instance screen should pre-select IDEALSQL as the Instance to upgrade. If it does not, select it, and then click Next:
15. At the Complete screen, click Close:
16. Restart the PC.
