Can Idealpos track the Expiry Date of Stock Items?
Q:
Is it possible to track the Expiry Dates of Stock Items, so that information could be provided on how many of the current items in stock are expired or about to expire.
A:
This is not possible and would not be possible unless each Stock Item had a unique serial identifier that could then be scanned/entered when the item is sold.
Explanation:
Currently, Stock Items are identified by a unique Code or Barcode.
When an item is sold, the Code or Barcode informs Idealpos of what item was sold and the stock level is reduced for that item. If, when that item is sold, there are currently 10 items that are not expired and 8 that are expired in stock, there is no way for Idealpos to know if the item sold should be deducted from the not expired or expired count.
Note that even large retailers like Coles/Woolworths do not have a tracking system for expiry, which is why they have to pay staff to manually read the expiry date on shelf products, moving newer products to the back, older to the front, reducing the price of items about to expire, and removing expired items from the shelf.
